Nowadays people are more likely than ever to grow up learning multiple languages which are more important to know than ever due to the fast globalization of our society because of multinational corporations and, more importantly, the growing presence of the internet in our lives. But is it really a good thing to learn multiple languages, sometimes even when you're forced to because of mandatory education?
For one, knowing a foreign language is extremely helpful if you like to travel, even if you don't speak the native language most people can communicate through basic english, whithout which it would be extremely hard to find an hotel or restaurant that provides translations to your specific language, and it also lets you communicate with people you never could have otherwise through various online communities on top of providing buissnes outings as a teacher, translator and such.
Being plurilingual has its downsides, however, such as confusing certain words, expressions or mannerisms that belong to a foreign one with those of your own maternal language, especially if they are similar like in the case of spanish and catalan. It can also affect the academic performance of those who would rather study numbers than letters but are forced to learn multiple languages if they want to get good grades.
So overall learning multiple languages is a positive thing unless you are someone who is particularly bad with letters and are going to school, which unfortunately is a lot of people but at least being decent at english is currently far too important to justify removing mandatory language courses at school.
